Tidworth Scouts Hut Renovation

The 1st Tidworth Scout Group has a newly renovated meeting place thanks to the generosity of Aspire Defence Capital Works (ADCW) and a number of its contractors.

1St Tidworth Scouts was first formed in 1908 shortly after Lord Baden Powell started the Scouting movement and it has been going strong ever since.  Named after former Group Scout Leader, Mr A Kendrew, the newly refurbished hut has been home to the Scouts for the last 20 years.  However, bringing the former Paddock Club building up to 21st century standards required a lot of planning.  Steve Francis, Building Services Manager for ADCW, said, “Our mission is to make soldiers’ lives better through the MOD’s Allenby/Connaught contract and we are fortunate that we have such an amazing and generous supply chain working with us to help extend that mission further into the local community.  In total we had volunteers from 15 companies who offered their materials and labour free of charge.”

The extensive renovation entailed rewiring the electrical system; installing new heating and air conditioning units; upgrading the internal fire alarm system; replacing the tiles around the kitchen worktops and sink units in the toilets after first reattaching them; repairing broken toilet cubicles, the cooker hood and ceiling panels; and installing a new waste system for the washing machine.  On completion of all this work, the necessary tests and checks were made to ensure that the building complied with the appropriate codes.

But the makeover doesn’t end there as Aspire will be back to tidy up the outside areas as well by relaying paving slabs and creating a base for the new external tent store which is an upcycled metal data cabinet.  Landscaping at the front will create a divide between the path and garden so that the old fence panels will no longer be needed which will also mean less upkeep for the future.  And the old wooden notice board will be replaced with a new custom built one complete with glass doors.

Steve Rhodes, Cub Scout Leader and Akela, said, “We can’t thank Aspire and all those who were involved in this renovation enough.  We constantly work hard at fundraising but would never have been able to raise the kind of funds needed to afford such a complete renovation.  Now that this work has been done, we can utilise our own finances to support activities for the young people which is obviously our prime objective.  We will continue to work with the children of our community secure in the knowledge that we are safe and compliant with all legislative requirements.”

Steve Francis added, “It seems quite fitting that in rebuilding and refurbishing the Tidworth Army camp originally designed by Lord Baden Powell that we are now helping to refurbish a building connected to his more well-known legacy, the Scouts.  Thanks go to all of our staff especially Ken Ellis and Nick Hearne, and our contractors who helped make this possible – Wingate Electrical, JN Controls, Protec, Ceramic Specialist Ltd, Rollalong, Chris Nixon Services, Raymond Brown, ISG, Gavin Jones, ERF, Wheelers, Speedy Hire, Thorn Lighting and the MOD who came to the rescue to provide some disused Army tents to replace those that had been damaged by vermin.  Hopefully we have ensured that this will not be able to happen in the future.”

With their headquarters set in a secluded wooded area, the 1st Tidworth Scouts consisting of 75 Scouts, Beavers and Cubs will be able to enjoy the newly refurbished building for years to come.
