As part of the redevelopment Aspire Defence are responsible for cleaning up contaminated land. Rather than simply dumping contaminated soil into a landfill Aspire Defence are actively seeking to develop new, more environmentally sound methods of treatment.
One approach is using charcoal treated with specially selected micro-organisms to firstly lock-up pollution and secondly (using the micro-organisms) break down and remove any oil or fuels which may be present. This research had been carried out in conjunction with the Universities of Surrey and Sheffield and Forest Research with funding in excess of £500,000 from the UK Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).
