A patch of unused land on Larkhill Garrison is now helping to power not only the Garrison itself, but also neighbouring military sites, marking\u00a0an important step\u00a0towards a more resilient and sustainable future for\u00a0the Army\u00a0across Salisbury Plain.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

A new solar array has officially opened at\u00a0Larkhill Garrison, transforming 2.5 hectares of\u00a0unused\u00a0green space into a source of clean, renewable energy. Comprising more than 4,000 solar panels, the installation is expected to generate approximately 1.7 GWh of electricity each year. To put that into perspective,\u00a0that’s\u00a0enough energy to power around 630 average UK homes annually.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Delivered by Aspire Defence\u00a0Capital Works\u00a0(ADCW) on behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), the project forms part of the Army’s wider effort to improve energy efficiency across its estate while strengthening long-term energy resilience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For the thousands of people who live and work across the Salisbury Plain military community, reliable infrastructure plays a vital role in supporting everything from daily routines\u00a0to\u00a0training activities.\u00a0Investments such as the new solar array help ensure essential services can continue to\u00a0operate\u00a0effectively while reducing environmental impact.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The benefits extend beyond Larkhill itself. Any surplus electricity generated by the solar array can be redistributed through a private wire network to neighbouring military locations at Bulford,\u00a0Tidworth\u00a0and Perham Down, supporting a more connected and efficient approach to energy use across the region.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The project is also expected to offset around 352 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions each year, contributing to broader efforts to reduce environmental impact and support the UK’s journey towards net zero emissions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sustainability has been built into the project in\u00a0more ways than one.\u00a0A\u00a0dedicated butterfly conservation area has been created\u00a0within the solar array\u00a0to encourage biodiversity and provide a habitat for local wildlife,\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0how environmental improvements can sit alongside essential infrastructure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By investing in practical solutions today,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0helping to create a stronger, more sustainable estate for the future, supporting the people who\u00a0serve,\u00a0and the communities connected to them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
