Aspire supports local school’s career programme
In December we welcomed Harrow Way Community School (Andover) to Larkhill Garrison.
The visit was offered to pupils in Year 9 and 10 embarking on their GCSEs, who wanted to learn more about careers in the construction industry.
A quiz was designed to get them thinking and asking lots of questions during their tour of ABP construction sites, which started at Purvis Lines.
They visited the technical assets where Richard Tindal, Project Director, and Anna Taylor, Section Manager, from Aspire Defence Capital Works, told them about the construction of the vast vehicle garages and stores, from the complex ventilation system for exhaust fumes, to the use of brightly coloured balloons hung from the ceiling to ward off nesting birds (… which the pupils initially guessed were disco balls).
The group watched a module being craned into a new single living accommodation block, before a tour inside finished senior ranks’ accommodation, which they said was the most impressive part of the visit.
The tour ended at the Project Office with a Q&A with Managing Director Paul Dempster, followed by a prize giving for the quiz winners: £50 in vouchers was shared between three students scoring 100%. Each pupil also took away a goody bag containing a scientific calculator, pad and pen.
Thanks to everyone from ADCW who supported this visit and ensured that the pupils were inspired and impressed along the way.
