A Magical Morning for Military Children: Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre Hosts Cinderella Pantomime
In a delightful initiative that brought festive cheer to the hearts of military children, Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre played host to a magical touring pantomime of Cinderella on Wednesday, 13 December 2023.
The event was the brainchild of Bookings and Administration Supervisor, Caroline Ashall, who aimed to support and give back to the military children in the Garrison area. “With many parents deployed over the Christmas period, I felt it would be a fantastic opportunity to give back under the Community Engagement Pillar,” she said.
The event became possible through generous donations from the Garrison Management Team, Sodexo, and ADSL, each contributing £500 towards the cost of the show. Tree and Grounds contractor, Gavin Jones, also donated refreshments and popcorn for the children to enjoy, while Aldershot Garrison HQ provided a selection box for each child to take away from the event.
The event drew attention not only for its heartwarming purpose but also for the notable sponsors and supporters rallying behind this cause. Among them, British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) was present, capturing enchanting moments and amplifying the spirit of generosity that permeated the venue.
Performed by the Chaplins Pantomime company, the event was attended by nearly one hundred children from nearby Clocktower Nursery and Marlborough School. The pantomime was a hit with the children, who laughed, cheered, and joined in with the songs and jokes. They were delighted by the colourful costumes, lively music, and magical effects, also learning valuable lessons about kindness, courage, and friendship from the story of Cinderella and her fairy godmother.
Caroline was thrilled by the success of the event and the positive feedback from the children and staff. She said, “It was a magical morning for everyone involved. I’m so glad we could make it happen and bring some joy and fun to the children. They deserve it.”
She also expressed gratitude to all the donors, partners, and volunteers who helped make the event possible. “I couldn’t have done it without their support and generosity. They are amazing, and I’m very thankful to them,” she said.
Caroline further thanked the friendly staff of the Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre, who helped prepare the venue for the show. “The AGSC team were all in full support of my idea, and were perfectly happy to wear all the seasonal hats/headbands that I brought in. The children’s faces were a delight when we greeted their arrival donning our festive wear.”
She shared hopes that the event would become an annual tradition, allowing more children to benefit in the future. “I hope we can do this again next year and make it even bigger and better. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the spirit of Christmas and the resilience of our military children. Perhaps even Santa could make an appearance next year if we get the go-ahead.”
