A patch of unused land on Larkhill Garrison is now helping to power not only the Garrison itself, but also neighbouring military sites, marking an important step towards a more resilient and sustainable future for the Army across Salisbury Plain. 

A new solar array has officially opened at Larkhill Garrison, transforming 2.5 hectares of unused green space into a source of clean, renewable energy. Comprising more than 4,000 solar panels, the installation is expected to generate approximately 1.7 GWh of electricity each year. To put that into perspective, that’s enough energy to power around 630 average UK homes annually. 

Delivered by Aspire Defence Capital Works (ADCW) on behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), the project forms part of the Army’s wider effort to improve energy efficiency across its estate while strengthening long-term energy resilience. 

For the thousands of people who live and work across the Salisbury Plain military community, reliable infrastructure plays a vital role in supporting everything from daily routines to training activities. Investments such as the new solar array help ensure essential services can continue to operate effectively while reducing environmental impact. 

The benefits extend beyond Larkhill itself. Any surplus electricity generated by the solar array can be redistributed through a private wire network to neighbouring military locations at Bulford, Tidworth and Perham Down, supporting a more connected and efficient approach to energy use across the region. 

The project is also expected to offset around 352 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions each year, contributing to broader efforts to reduce environmental impact and support the UK’s journey towards net zero emissions. 

Sustainability has been built into the project in more ways than one. A dedicated butterfly conservation area has been created within the solar array to encourage biodiversity and provide a habitat for local wildlife, demonstrating how environmental improvements can sit alongside essential infrastructure.
